Rare Antique Japanese Wood Fishing Float With Kanji Maker's Marks.. Pre Glass (#8)
This is a rare antique wooden Japanese fishing float. These wood floats were used by fishermen in Japan until the early 1900's when they started using glass (It pre-dates glass floats). It measures approximately 5" long and 2 1/2" in diameter. It is made entirely of wood with a hole in the middle for attaching it with rope to the fishing nets. This float is very impressive and interesting in that it is hand made and has Kanji maker's marks and Japanese symbols burnt into it on is sides in four places (see photos). This fishing float was actually used and has spent much of its life at sea. It is in good condition with the normal wear, nicks and dings one finds on wooden fishing floats that have survived years of use in the ocean (see photos). It is a great antique piece that displays very well (see photos). Every vintage wood float is a little different from others in that they were hand made and have different symbols and maker's marks. This one has many beautiful unique features (see photos).
